We often associate kindness with how we treat other people, but our planet does so much for us too, and we don’t always recognise it or return the favour – mama earth deserves our kindness, too. For easy-to-follow Earth Day ideas and tips (and for kids), read on. You might be surprised at how many of these practices your family might already be doing.
Every year on April 22, Earth Day comes to summon a brotherhood of appreciation for mama earth. In honour to show our kindness to Earth Day, we’ve put a list of easy ways to be kinder to the planet day by day. With these simple actions, Earth Day can be celebrated as if it's everyday! 💚
Eat locally or at home.
Be a local home tourist and explore the local restaurants, businesses and coffee shops on your door step. Eating locally can be a fun way to try something new too. Eating from local restaurants or farmers markets cuts down on the costs associated with food transportation. OR, try cooking a new meal at home? Cooking at home with the kids can be great bonding time together too, and saving spare food in reusable containers cuts down on the waste generated from take out containers. A yummy, win win!!
Bring your own bag.
Try using a reusable shopping bag. Not only are they sturdier and longer lasting than traditional plastic, storing them in a car keeps you prepared for even the most last minute of grocery runs. Need inspiration? Look no further, take a look at our very own When Alice Sleeps re-useable shopper.
Educate yourself.
Everyday is a good day to learn a little bit more about how to treat the planet better. Instilling good habits in your kids when it comes to sustainability is important. As your children get more excited about taking care of Earth, they might even come up with more ideas of their own. The more we all get to know, the more we can help the planet grow together!
Use wheels to school, work or play.
You can’t swap all your car trips for bike rides, just doing it occasionally will still reap huge benefits for the planet.
Plant a tree or flowers.
Help to create more clean air by planting trees, shrubs and flowers. They’ll absorb CO2, release more oxygen and are great for the soil in your garden.
Grow your own.
Flex your green fingers by growing some of your own yummy foods. Cherry tomatoes and herbs are an easy place to start and can even be nurtured on windowsills, while root veggies are a tasty project if you have a nice garden patch. Why not get the kids involved too for some outdoor fun, as well as learning about how foods are grown? With this in mind, kids can pick out their favourite fruits and veggies and even create fun snacks with a variety of combinations.
